Limestone held opponents to less than 10 goals in a game a total of 11 times during the 2019 campaign and spent 10 weeks ranked #1 nationally, while reaching the 2019 National Title Game with a perfect 20-0 record. Faceoff specialist Dakota Kirsch-Downs and Christopher Parrott both ranked in the top-10 nationally in winning percentage, while Jordan Stouros was named as the D2 National Long Stick Midfielder of the Year under Phelps’ tutelage.
He joined the Saints after helping guide UMass to a sweep of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season and tournament championships during the 2018 season. The Minutemen finished with a 12-5 overall record before getting edged by Yale University, the eventual NCAA Division I National Champions, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
He mentored one of the nation’s top faceoff specialists in Noah Rak, a 2018 First-Team All-CAA selection, while the faceoff unit finished in the top-15 nationally in winning percentage. Rak, who was taken by the Charlotte Hounds in the 2018 Major League Lacrosse Draft, ranked ninth in NCAA Division I with a .611 winning percentage and eighth overall with 8.06 groundballs per game.
Prior to his time at UMass, Phelps spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Division III Rhodes College (Tenn.). The Lynx boasted one of the nation’s top defensive units in 2016, allowing just 6.25 goals per game, as well as the #1 Man Down Unit nationally, at 87.7%. In 2017, the team posted a program-record 14 wins and it’s first ever Conference Championship.
While serving as a defensive coordinator for two years at Goucher College (Md.), Phelps completed a coaching internship at the United States Naval Academy. He worked closely with faceoff specialist Brady Dove, who was a First-Team All-Patriot League selection during the 2015 season.
Phelps got his start in coaching at Division III Guilford College (N.C.) in 2011, a Quaker founded institution, working primarily with the faceoff unit, before taking over as the defensive coordinator at Division III Marywood University (Pa.). His defenses consistently ranked in the top-tier of each respective conference.
Most recently, Coach Phelps has put a focus on the high school level, having spent one season as the Head Coach at Mullen High School in Denver, CO, before coming back east to work with Team Carolina and Sweetlax Carolina.
