Coaches

Dave Mitchell

Coach Dave Mitchell is the President and Co-Owner of Next Level Lacrosse.  Dave is fortunate to have outstanding teachers, coaches, and role models who helped shape his life in a very positive way.  Inspired by those relationships and by the transformational power of teaching and sports, Dave aspired to be a life-long coach at an early age.

While in high school, Coach Dave was class president, a three-sport athlete, and a two-time captain for the varsity lacrosse team.  He went on to attend Loyola University, where he was offered and accepted the position of JV Head Coach for The Friends School in Baltimore.
After graduating Loyola University magna cum laude, Dave went back to his alma mater, The Heights School, to serve as 6th grade homeroom teacher and to pursue his love of coaching.  Dave was the Head Varsity Coach for the Cavaliers for 12 seasons.  During that time the team earned a 101-65 record, including two Metro Independent Lacrosse League Championships.  Dave was awarded US Lacrosse “Coach of the Year” in 2011, 2013, 2017, and 2018.  In June of 2021, Dave became the Head Varsity Coach for DeMatha Catholic High School.
After four years as a homeroom teacher, Coach Dave turned to the club lacrosse world to pursue coaching full time.  He became General Manager of Next Level Lacrosse in 2014, and then President in 2016.  Since that time, Next Level has experienced significant growth in all areas, and is now recognized as one of the most competitive club programs in the country.

Ryan Whyte

Coach Whyte is the Co-Head Coach for the 2028 Blue team. Coach Whyte was a three-sport standout in football, hockey, and lacrosse at St. John’s College High School. He was voted Varsity Hockey Captain his sophomore year and Varsity Football and Lacrosse captain as a senior. Coach received the Varsity Football Coaches Award his senior year. He was voted first-team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference for football as a senior and second-team as a junior. He also earned second-team all-league honors in lacrosse his senior year. Coach Whyte then went on to play football at Georgetown University. He joined the Georgetown club lacrosse team at the end of his Sophomore year and was President of the club lacrosse program as a Senior.  Coach Whyte was the Head JV Lacrosse Coach for St. John’s for one year and has been a Next Level Head Coach and Assistant Coach for eight years.

Dane Smith

Coach Dane Smith has extensive experience on both sides of the college recruiting process and a terrific track record of success as a lacrosse coach.

Coach Dane was the Head Coach for St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland. In his first 6 seasons, Coach Smith has a 65% winning percentage and most recently his team secured back-to-back conference titles. Many of Coach Smith’s players have graduated and continued their careers at the NCAA level. In total 15 players have been recruited athletes in the past 6 seasons (Ex. Maryland, UMBC, Amherst, Marist, Albany, Christopher Newport). Coach Dane will begin as Head Coach at Good Counsel starting in the fall of 2022

Prior to his time at St. Andrew’s Dane spent two seasons as a Division 1 assistant coach at Robert Morris University. In his first season at Robert Morris (2013), the team reached the NEC championship for the first time in school history. The defense at RMU finished 1st in the country in caused turnovers in 2013, 3rd in the country in caused turnovers in 2014, and the man down unit finished among the top 15 in the country for both seasons under the direction of Smith.

Prior to his time at RMU, Dane spent time as a Division 3 assistant coach at Otterbein University in Columbus, Ohio.

Coach Smith is a 2011 graduate of Robert Morris University. Coach Dane was a two-year captain for the Colonials, helping RMU to a then program record 10 wins in 2010 before leading the squad to its first-ever postseason berth in 2011. As a defensive midfielder, Smith competed in 53 career contests for Robert Morris and tallied 44 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. He also displayed a level of dependability as he played in 46 consecutive games to close his Colonial career.
